UNIT 4: SHAPING WITH SHORT ROWS

YOU WILL LEARN TO

• Work short rows, turning on the right side.
• Work short rows, turning on the wrong side.
• Work an edge stitch for seaming.
• Sew patterned pieces together with mattress stitch.
• Work a waistband/double edge and assemble it in different ways.

One of the wonders of knitting is the ability to shape pieces as you go. This can be done using increases and decreases but also with short rows, which is this unit’s primary focus. Short rows allow you to add extra volume or shape to specific areas. We work short rows using the wrap-and-turn method, as seen in the Vala shorts and pants and the sleeves of the Vala cardigan. We sew patterned pieces together neatly, and we work a waistband.
All the methods you learn can be applied to other projects.
